'64 C72 points cover screws

Post by chuckr » Wed May 22, 2019 8:53 am

Greetings, I'm new to Honda's and this forum. I just acquired a good running '64 CA72 and have searched here and Google and am stumped - I am trying to find correct screw size for the points cover. Mine were stripped beyond use...I assume they are metric. I have them but can't seem to find a match.

Thanks, Chuck

Points cover screws

The original screws would have been a Japanese spec, (J.I.S.) 5mm x 0.9mm pitch.

These went out of general use in the mid 1960's

They can still be found via the Internet but it's probably easiest to get a Helicoil or similar thread insert fitted to accept a 'standard' ISO 5mm x 0.8mm screw which you can buy anywhere.

The inserts may cost you less than the JIS screws even if you find some.

Also, be careful when drilling and tapping those holes for inserts, as they are blind holes. Behind them are oil passages that direct pressurized oil to the rocker arms and shafts on the right cylinder. Regards, Chase

thanks Chase. I believe I located a few screws. But in the meantime I was able to cut a groove in the head to use a flat head screwdriver, for the interim. Chuck
