do i just pry them off with a little twist or are they locked in with a nut?

thanks to all your input i was able to fix this problem.

i took off the drive gear at the wheel, cleaned it, lubed it, put it on correctly, tightened axle nut properly, lubed the inner speedo cable, and now she is running as it should.

my speedo and drive head have been acting up lately, at first it was a whinig sound every now and then coming from the front wheel , then i had noticed the speedo drive head at the front wheel was starting to over rotate causing the spedo cable to bend and bind. in problem solving i have temperarily ...

i am not in the market for shocks, i just thought they were interesting.

thanks for the description, is this all explained in the Bill Silver's Books or just aquired knowledge?
