Jeez, Graham! Where did you start? I think I might've been tempted to throw that one back into the sea! Respect to you, mate.

Yeah, but no idea why. I bought it like it, painted the whole bike white, then sold* it like it. Only ever had a tank badge in the left side, and that was cracked at the screw holes (weren't they all?)...

*Correction: straight-swapped it with a mate for a lovely little black C95 (150cc baby Dream), the lead-up to which is documented on the forum: I'd had the tank off to spray it white, and I removed stuff, away from the frame tube -- throttle cables included-- in order to do the same. Upon re-assembly I found that it would happily start with no choke applied, but it soon started to black-smoke and dropped to around half its usual mpg.

After a couple of weeks I found that I couldn't afford to gas it -- I was tenderly sixteen and apprenticed -- so my (better-informed) 'mate' offered a swap for his '65 C95. I swear he knew what the fix would be...

Well, I was sitting in a Hotel room somewhere in the USA, doing my usual trawl of eBay when this cropped up. Amid all the rust, the 1961 details peeked through and then the seller had a copy of the original buff registration book. The engine and frame numbers match. Both end in exactly the same three numbers.

I spent a few days of 'shall I / shan't I' and eventually went for it. The owner was selling the bike from a hoarde that his suddenly deceased brother had built up and it was a sad occasion. There were loads of bike all in this condition but all had paperwork. The seller was a really nice guy and I promised to keep him informed of progress.

After all that time in a damp shed the engine turned over with plenty of compression. The bike has obviously been crashed and bashed (weren't they all) and had a 350 kit as well as those other bits of cafe racerisation......

Normally, I personalise my projects but I want this one to be as near to original as I can make it. I'm in no hurry.

With your help we'll be able to build a matching pair. A standard showroom model and a fully-kitted CYB72..... :-)
