I pulled the rotor today and discovered that my starter clutch had disintegrated. That's what I said! All three screws had snapped off, the backside of the rotor is essentially ruined, and most of the sprague clutch innards are nowhere to be found. So, I need to find a good used rotor and starter clutch.

On the other hand, when I got the cases split, I discovered that my transmission is in EXCELLENT shape. The 14mm bushing shows no wear, nor does the kick starter pawl. The shift forks are perfectly okay, and all of the dogs look just fine, as well. Now, why did I buy a new transmission? Well, I'll put the new transmission in the cases, but first some major cleaning needs to be done. If anyone spots something I didn't, or has suggestions, please, I'm more than happy to hear them!

By the way, the ding in the right front of the bottom case barely intruded into the inside, so I'm going to clean that up and put some fresh JB Weld on the inside of the case - but yes, I'll see if I can have it welded first.

Sara,

It looks like your 14mm bushing is shot. I am attaching a photo of what a new one looks like. That ridge on mine measures 19.92mm diam. It looks like yours is worn to a nubbin. I believe that ridge acts like a thrust washer and keeps the counter shaft from touching the low gear.

You're right, mine is toast! The ridge is much smaller than that, clearly worn. It looks like the transmission I bought last month will go in the engine after all.

Hi,

Not everything what shines is good. Kickstarter pawl ?, I would replace it without hesitations.
14 mm bushing ?, just like Tom said, it's shot. Did you draw your conclusions on your transmission with the eye or with a pair of callipers ?

When someone is for the first time in an engine one can be overwhelmed with joy and happiness, because everything seems to be in nice shape, and draw the conclusion that it is ok. But everything runs in oil, so it is clean and as long you don't see heavy damage, it doesn't mean it's ok.

Hmm. Your original posted pictures show 18182 miles on the odometer; my Dream has over 19,000 miles. So I suppose I'm looking at some transmission work as well...
