She shifts, she's now in neutral, the clutch works (as far I can tell), and I'm ready (I think) to tackle the pistons, barrel, and the rest of the top end. I still need to secure the liners in the barrel; right now I'm baking cookies, so it will have to wait!

She shifted very easily, and finding neutral was as easy as I remember when she was a running motorcycle. This is pretty cool!

First - HAPPY HOLIDAYS, everyone!

Second - I am working on her. I've been doing a lot of small things. Here's some photos of the barrel and the pistons. I have the rings installed, in prep for putting the barrel on the cases sometime soon. NO, I have not put the barrel in the oven yet to get that liner seated. Of course that will happen before anything else goes on with the barrel.

The rings are installed according to this:

You'll be able to pop the barrel in just before the Christmas lunch goes in.

I did some fiddling with the barrel when I got home from work last night. First of all, when the barrel came from the machinist last summer, those liners were both loose. They would move up and down a good 1/8 inch, but they would not move any further than that (I did NOT try to remove them from the barrel). I discussed that with you fellas at the time. When I pulled the engine apart, the liners were both tight, and would not move. Well, now they will NOT budge, either. They're tight, once again. The right (number 2) cylinder liner is sitting high in the barrel (it was number 1, the left side, that had seized), so I'm going to "bake it" to get it to properly seat. Once it's seated, I'm confident it will stay there. After all, the head contacts the top surface of the liners and holds them in place, yes?

I'm not worried about improper heat transfer from the liners to the barrel once the engine is together. I'm almost certain the seizure was caused by overheating from advanced ignition, not loose liners.
