In the mean time, look what someone did to this 450! It is sitting in a reception area of a business on an airport as a display. I was told it runs and rides. Cute!

A pair of broad 60mm hose clamps, well lubed, would do it.

Alternatively, you could scissor-cut some small food tins and secure them around the top of the pistons with two or three zip-ties.

Thank you, Steve. Luckily (or not) I haven't gotten to the task, yet. Somehow things just keep cropping up.... ;)

I should mention, Sara: avoid the 'Jubilee'-type worm-drive hose clips; they will score the pistons. Use the clamp type, with the screw & nut through the folded-back tabs (much like the clamp on your starter motor, covering the brushes' access apertures).

Okay, gotcha - thank you for that!

I did this in my laundry room where it was warm and brightly lit. I had no problems at all, the pistons just pretty much slid right into the liners with no arguments. I used plenty of oil on the liners and rings (and the wristpins), and it made for a reasonably easy assembly.

Something looks to be off here. The drive chain for the oil slinger appears to be offset towards the outside, away from the center cases. Is that thrust washer in the right place, against the center cases, or does it go on the outside of the slinger body, under the alignment pin?
