Here is the clutch side opened up. This is a 1962 motor and has the early clutch pack.

Since I'm taking down the motor I will slide out the primary drive sprocket and clutch basket with the primary chain as a unit. To get the nut lock off you need to flatten the lock washer tabs. You should fid at least one folded over into one of the recesses on the lock nut. Next take a flattened chisel or heavy screwdriver and give the nut a whack in the counter clockwise position. After loosening it should just finger spin off. I noticed a problem with my assy and I'll tell you about it in the next post.

The problem I noticed was the filter drive sprocket spring washer was on the wrong side of the oil filter drive gear. The washer you see in the photo should have been on the other side of the gear. It put the drive gear and the oil filter gear out of alignment. Consequently I got some wear on the teeth and who knows where the little filings found there way to.

I got on to removing the clutch. Remove the 4 clutch bolts and clutch springs and then the pressure plate. Yup, crappy old phenolic friction disks.

I started taking out the plates and disks. I was surprised to find 3 wire springs instead of 2. In the close up photo I had already pushed one of the ends through on the first spring.

After the plates, disks and springs are removed, remove the snap ring and pull out the clutch center.

Before you can slide the basket out you will need to remove the primary chain tensioner. 2 bolts and it comes off. You can now slide the clutch basket, primary drive sprocket and chain out as a unit.
