CL77 installed static valve spring length
I'm looking for the factory specification of a static OEM valve spring length as installed. I have a 1965 CL77 that looks like it's been around the horn a few times. I have had the valve seats cleaned up and valves refaced. I would like to set the static installed length with shims but can't seem to find reliable specs for OEM springs. Thanks for any help.

Re: CL77 installed static valve spring length
The CB77 spec is
Inner spring length 37.54 mm
Outer spring length 43.36 mm
You mentioned installed length but that will indicate nothing about the condition of the spring. The above lengths are free lengths. I believe that the specs are identical with the CL77.

Re: CL77 installed static valve spring length
Thanks for this. I have checked the free length of my springs and I am good there. Because of the valve work, which makes the stem a little longer feeling to the spring, I want to make sure the installed spring length is in tolerance with factory spec by placing shims under the spring. I just can't find that spec.

Re: CL77 installed static valve spring length
I am also working up a 1967 Cl77 that I am most likely the third owner of. I believe the 16,000 miles on the odometer to be actual. I got that head back from the machine shop and the valve seats needed a minor touch to clean up. I purchased NOS valves and springs for that head and decided to measure the static installed height of the spring. It measured 34.7mm for the outer spring. The manual has information on testing the pressure of the springs. It tests the outer spring pressure at two heights. One height is 34.5mm and the other is 27.5mm. I decided to use 34.5 as the static installed height of the outer spring. I have one valve in the '65 shimmed to that spec. I have tested it with the lifter and cam installed. When I compress the valve open and let it rest on high lobe, the spring is definitely not bound with coil touching coil. I was able to run a .080" feeler guage between the coils. I think I will run with this decision, but please let me know if you think I might be going down the wrong trail.
Thanks!
