'tickover' is idle, IIRC.

I am not an expert on bike electrics, but in general diagnostics terms, if your old stator and the rebuilt stator both produce wrong output, then a second look at other components (including the multimeter and testing methodology) is prudent.

I was recently working on a "stretch a rubber part to fit over a detent" type project (not knee pads, but still) and found that wearing latex gloves is useful - for their grippy quality - sometimes allowing for that last extra bit of stretch. Also: Ruglide (look it up)...

+1 on what Larry said. I've seen similar 180-deg issues with other motors too. It's a great feeling, when after the next 180-deg swap the motor comes to life and settles into idle... Hope to hear tom114 reporting success!

I doubt the new battery itself would cause this, as you suspect.

A common failure point for the wire harness (on many bikes) is the frame head wrap around. I would isolate and investigate/test that area first...

To pile on, in good company, I would add: check the needle position in the slide and the actual size of the carb jet. Make sure both are in spec.
