The next chapter of the CB77 saga is now complete. The bike was inspected by the Washington State Patrol and passed. It now is registered and has a collector vehicle license plate. I rode it 30 miles round trip to the inspection station. Went about 40 mph and it ran great!

A few thoughts. Have you checked the routing and function of the throttle cable? Routing can be a lot more important than you might think. Also the nuts holding on the carbs are touchy about the about the amount of torque. Too much can cause them to bind. Have you had the carbs off or apart lately? ...

The only thing I have experienced making the sound you describe was a broken starter clutch. Have you checked that side of the engine?

The cables have presented some unique challenges. On the throttle cable the length of the cable after the end of the cable conduit was not long enough. I trimmed 1/2" of each of the lower throttle cable conduit to effectively make the cable longer and allow the slide to bottom out. So far it is work...
