new member, all to familiar ooooooold problem--air leak

Post by rustywrench » Sat May 16, 2009 8:48 pm

Last march I picked up this 67 cl77 and began fixing many years of bad mechanics. Vice grips on the shift shaft, removed kick start, etc, you all know the story. With a lot of patience and time I was able to set this old girl set up according to LM's recipe of set up. Third kick and I got to hear those sweet scrambler pipes again after 25 years of sitting. After many hours of tweeking these carbs and even more hours of reading and re-reading these pages of helpfull advice,SUCCESS!!!!! Purrs like a kitten. For a while, that is.

Damn thing would not idle down after a short run. Oh well, back to the forum.
Many of you know the drill. Pull carb try this, pull carb try that. I discovered that the block was damaged and the o-ring against the engine was flat and hard as a rock. So Off to the parts store I go (parts bikes). My cl72 eng had a good one with a decent o-ring. Only problem is, it has a smaller diameter shaft (22MM). Doesn't seem to affect the performance at all but at least it solved the problem for the time being. At least until I can locate a new spacer block and O-ring.

So there boys and girls is my success story for the month. This bike now runs like a raped ape. Great throttle response all the way through the range and the plugs are tan to light grey. Just a bit of popping from the right bank as she comes down to Idle then goes away. We'll address that another day.

Thanks heartily to all those who devote your time for our success. WOOPEEEEEEEEEE! let's ride,
RW

RW, congratulations! It's a great feeling to bring these old bikes back to life.

I just picked up the other half of a parts bike and darned my good luck if in the bottom of a box of engine parts there layed a carb block in good condition. With Gregs o-rings, I should have this thing right once again. Thank you Greg for making these available.. RW
