excessive throttle play

Post by Eljeef » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:10 pm

Hi Folks. Could somebody comment on what amount of play is normal in the throttle before it actually engages the cable? I have the rubber grip off and, holding the steel cylinder with my thumb and forefinger, I can jiggle the throttle back and forth about two or three millimeters. Is that normal or should there be no looseness? Perhaps there is a small plastic bushing that is missing. Jeff H.

Jeff - If it's only wigglin' 2-3mm you're doing pretty good! There's usually quite a bit of free-play in that setup. There's no plastic bushing - just what's shown in the parts manual. The piece that slides under the throttle tube does wear some, and they are readily available on ebay if you want to try and tighten it up a little. I wouldn't worry about it though as long as the throttle operates smoothly (they don't snap back like "normal" ones).

My throttle snaps back like a whip. Sharp and crisp.

I think we're talking about the CA mechanism here, if not, disregard what I said before! The CB's have a completely different throttle mechanism that will snap back. The CA's have a sliding mechanism under the tube that acts a little like a cruise control on long trips.

Yes, I have a C77 Dream. If the throttle normally has about a quarter inch of travel before it actually engages any resistance then I will leave it alone. Thanks for the input everyone. Jeff H.
