bike wont start. Carb?

Post by linemup » Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:17 pm

Just bought a 61 dream a week ago. finally got a key and was excited to crank bike. it won't do it. took plugs out, and has spark.........motor is not seized of course. took fuel line off of pet cock reserve and fuel does come out. while not the cleanest i would think it would at least try to crank. key point. bike was last tagged in 1970..still has tag on it. should i just go ahead and rebuild carb? Not that i know how but can try. if so, where do i buy it and how much do they run? like most, im on a bidget.....................would love toget bike running. it just turns over and over and over. seems like fuel issue to me.

Empty all the old fuel out and at least flush the tank.
Remove and clean the petcock.
Remove and clean the carb.
Get some new fuel line.
You may not even need any new parts, maybe just a bowl gasket for the carb, maybe a pectock repair kit.
There is a sticky in one of the forum topics with suggested vendors....here:

Change the oil, go thru the tune up procedure, even though you may not need all new parts....ie check timing, points gap, spark plugs etc, and see if you get spark when it turns over etc.
Then put in fresh gas and see what happens.

make sure your battery is FULLY charged and then use the kicker to initially start it. You will get a faster revolution of the crank and if it's gonna start, it will start sooner using the foot rather than the thumb.

is the plug wet? give it like 10-20 kicks and if the spark plug isn't wet with gas then theres something wrong with the carbs or the line to em is clogged. gas tends to leave a waxy thick residue when it is left out and gets old

or are your float bowls even filled with gas?

i'd say clean up the carb at least

carb

I,ve been sick a few days now. probably going to give all of this a whirl tomorrow. I don't have a good battery. so i was merely jumping if off with my truck to see if it would crank before spending money on a new battery. not sure if that is as good as a fresh battery but would think so. anyone know how many quarts of oil these things hold after draining old oil? also, what type do you all use. thanks so very much for help. would love to get this thing running. it did crank months ago.........according to friends.

carbs

Linemup,
If the bike has been sitting for some time...like since 1970...more than likely the jets in the carb are sealed closed with shellac like crust which would prevent fuel flow into the cylinders. Not sure on the dream if ya have one or two carbs ( I own a CL model which has two), but I would think the jet set up would be the same. As stated before, remove the carb, remove the bowl, flip it over and look up into the body. You'll see possibly two brass colored screws which can be removed with a medium flat blade screw driver. Remove these, and you'll see there are several pin holes around the brass jet body as well as through the center. Clean these out good. These are what get shellacked over and literally plug the orifices thus preventing fuel to the cylinders. Be careful when handling the carb with the bowl off...tiny things can fall out undetected and then yer had...but not permanently. Do you have an oil dip stick in the thing? I set the level between the two notches which is a little over a quart I think. It may be marked on the engine cover by the VIN number how much to use. I use 30wt non detergent oil.
Hope all works out well for ya.
Mike
