Fuel not shutting off?

Post by Geeky160 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 12:26 pm

Has anyone run into this problem? It seems that when I was doing a thorough job of cleaning my fuel valve, I broke off or somehow lost one or two of these little pipes inside the valve. Would this not enable me to shut off the fuel? Thanks

It shouldn't matter, as long as the washer seals against the flat surface around the holes and the back of the lever is in good shape(flat & smooth). All the raised tubes do is keep the rubber washer from moving.

Thanks Mike, that's what I thought. I've had it apart 3 times trying to get a seal, everything looks smooth. I'll try bending the wavy washer to get more pressure.

I never could figure it out. Luckily, I had a spare that seems to be functioning properly even using the same lever, seal and wavy.

One time I fought a leaky petcock on a 500-4 for days until I realized there were no sealing washers under the heads of the mounting screws. The gas ran down the threads into the sediment bowl, by-passing the valve altogether.

Mike, that's probably what bit me too then. I forgot to say the petcock rebuild kit had metal washers that I assume was for the mounting screws. I couldn't find any others in the kit that looked to be the right size so used them. The spare petcock I had has the fiber type washers so I just reused them. No leaky, yep that was it. Thanks!
