Okay Kigs, We are running the Uni foam (sock filter also) It runs great, and we've had no issues. Plus they are readily available. I'd return the hose, and go with someone else that you KNOW is going to work. Plus something that you know is reliable, so many members are using the Uni filters and so far, nobody that I know of has had an issue. I hope that helps. I understand it must be frustrating, that its not the right one, but I would just say, forget it and send it back. If it doesn't work for your installation why keep it? Let us know what you decide to do. I am going to post pictures and a video (link via youtube) when the bike is finished in the next few days.

I'm SO glad you got it running!! What a great Christmas present! I think you're right about the tube. I'm going to go with the Uni. The old tube was working OK, but it was starting to show some wear and the edges were cracking off. Even though no one sees it, I wanted to replace it. Didn't think it was going to be such a hassle. The bike was running well, even after I put the old tube back in, but now it's not running again. The engine is starting, but just won't turn over. I'm getting fuel. I think maybe there may be a clog in one of the jets or maybe the float is stuck. My neighbor thinks it may be the coil because he doesn't think the spark is big enough (even with new plugs). Were you getting spark even with a bad coil? I'm wondering if the coil either works or it doesn't. Can it work, but just not produce enough energy to make a good spark or does it just die completely? What were your symptoms that lead you to knowing it was the coil?

Well our bike actually started a few times, and even ran for about 10 minutes. Then we tried to restart it and it just simply wouldnt start. It backfired, but it just wouldn't (start). When the coil was cool to the touch the spark was fair. However, after cranking it a few times, the coil would heat up (extremely warm to the touch). We still got spark, but it wasn't much. We had a new condenser, new points (which by the way were sold to us by a Honda Dealership and were incorrect for our points backing plate). So, after chasing everything thing else down, we ran a conductivity test with a voltage meter, and found that there was a short in the coil. So we replaced it with a donor coil from Mike on the Forum. I think it was from a late model Dream, because it has the spark plug wires that are permanently attached instead of the early model removeable wires. I was told from a few sources that it is pretty rare for the coils to go bad in the dreams, but it DOES happen every so often. I just chalked it up to being 48 years old! Are you getting fuel to the cylinders? I would check the float, and clean the carb, double check that none of those wires near the air cleaner got disconnected while removing the air tube. If all else fails, you could always try a new coil. Just know that I was told it is rare for them to go bad. Check to see if it is cool to the touch or getting warm. You could also try trimming your plug wires back and reinstall the plugs over the newly trimmed wires. Keep us posted. Good luck!

Thank you for all the info! I don't think it's the coil (not that I know what I'm talking about!) But I'm gonna trim the wires (good idea!) to make sure I'm getting a good connection. I think it's the carb. I didn't have much gas in it while we were working on it so when we got it running we were so excited we took turns riding it around the block. I think some dirt may be clogging a jet. Well, I bought the bike to learn on.....guess I'm gonna learn about carbs now!! Thanks for the help and let me know how your first ride goes!!

Kigsby,

You can probably fix your old air tube with some Scotch 23 self vuncanizing tape. Put the tube on the filter or carb, whichever end is deteriorating. Clean it well with alcohol or acetone, and I mean WELL. Then wrap the OD with the Scotch 33. You have to stretch it a bit as you wrap it, but it will stick to itself (has a vinyl strip you peel off as you apply it) and really become one piece. It's not cheap, but a single roll should fix you up. It's a flat black rubber so won't be overly noticeable.

You can get it at a store with a good electrical dept or just go to electrical supply house and tell they you want self-vulcanizing rubber tape. 3M brand is Scotch 23, but others make it too. They also make a silicone self-fusing tape, but I've never used it before.

regards,
Rob

Thanks Rob! That sounds exactly like what I need! (The silver tape I have now looks horrible). I know no one sees it, but I know it's there!

Well I took the carb out for cleaning and thought I would post some pics to see if they were the correct carbs for a '62 Dream 305. That may solve the mystery as to why the new air tube didn't fit. So.....does it look like the correct carb?
