Mike gave me a very good deal on another set of carbs. I am going to build those up and strap them on and see what happens.

Personally, my idiot, uninformed opinion is the advancer is shot.

Sorry to be such a burden on the forum. But at least maybe my fight to the death with this bike has been entertaining for some folks.

First, your struggle is truly the reason for this forum. I wouldn't sweat that for a second. Hell, since I got my Dream in early February I've bombarded this place with posts and I see no letup in sight! So what.

I am looking forward to hearing about that voila! moment that is sure to come. Keep hacking away. I'll keep posting about clutch springs and battery box grommets!

If you think the advancer is potentially an issue, try to grab the points cam and try to rotate it forward or backwards.

It should be all the way back and there should be spring resistance to rotating forwards that you should be able to feel. If it won't move at all or if it has a lot of slop, that could be the issue. Easy to check.

Jon: you should receive the carbs shortly, if you haven't by now. They looked good to me (seller's remorse !) Go back and read my post where I said you'd have a reliable bike. Been there, done that ( with several brands of bikes: sold an R75/5 that I wish I had back because I had the valves set too tight by about 0.001, and it wouldn't start warm.) Take heart. You'll get to the bottom of it.
Remember, these bikes are made of simple mechanical systems, added to other simple mechanical systems, to make more complicated systems. That same engine should yield some very usable top end parts if you need them . Let me know.

Will try cam trick, as I am going to redo timing again.

Got the carbs!

They cleaned up great and will try them tmw.

I think I owe you some money Mike. They are worth a lot more.

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Yeah, those carbs were worth thousands, but my wife "casually" mentioned that she couldnt walk through the basement, and hinted (in a soft but very direct manner) that I should not buy any more bikes, and my health would improve if I cleaned things up and got rid of a lot of "stuff." If you need any more parts, I probably can help out. Looks like the top end on the engine should be usable also ( if I can get it apart) (Shameless self promotion: see my ad in the classifieds. Help reduce husband abuse in the motorcycle community.)
Like I said before. Hang in there. My son still reminds me about swapping the R75/5 for an RD 400 because it wouldn't start when warm, when all it needed was the exhaust valve clearance opened up about 0.001. We both miss that bike.

Ok, here is the update. Progress made, but not there yet.

Started over with Ed's recipe.

Timing was way off. Every time I set it, I come back later and its way advanced.

Set it carefully with a pilot light, and checked with a timing strobe.

It is running right on with the pilot lamp, and a little left of the mark with the strobe.

When revved to 4000, the timing is a good ways left of the two marks. I hope thats good. I know its not suppose to pass them, but not sure if it should be near or far.

So, timing is set, and I am running 135 and stock airboxes, on the 2nd from bottom needle.

Top adjusters are all the way in, then backed out a half turn.

Mix screws at 1 and 1/4, slide side screws all the way out.

Checked synch with thumb and finger and all is well.

Kick it over and it won't idle with side screws out.

Turn them in slowly and balance the idle at 1200. Still rides up to 1800 some, and then back down. Can't get a solid idle. Decent, but not solid.

Messed around with the mix screws, and it seems to like one turn in, which is less than the 1 and 1/4 min. Problem?

The bike runs decent, and doesn't hesitate off the line. It is going up hills better.

Plugs look good, decent throttle response, not great.

The idle still goes up and down, and I don't think its timing.

I am considering swapping out the carbs, even though the bike will run now and changing carbs might kill it again.

One other oddity. Filled up the gas, and the tank is bubbling like club soda.

Literally bubbles coming up like a hot spring - this with the petcock off and no fuel flowing.

Huge air rushing out of cap when I loosen it.

I have two holes, and don't seem to be getting vapor lock.

I don't remember ordering carbonated gas, but that's what this seems like.

This bike always has some new surprise for me....
