The cable should move freely in the housing with very little resistance at all.
If it's not permanently kinked at any location, you can try cleaning it with WD40 and then lubing it with motor oil to free it up.
I use a plastic baggie, poked over one end and a rubber band wrapped around to make a seal. Then hang it up by the baggie and squirt the WD40 in the bag and let it soak until it comes out the bottom end. Same with the motor oil.
It's not hard to replace other than fighting to compress the throttle slide spring while you hook the cable end into the carb slide.
Cables are not that expensive and are available. Get the correct replacement. Check the Marketplace link.

brewsky - Thanks. For good measure I think I may go ahead and replace the throttle cable. To do so I'm assuming I'd need to take the carburetor off the bike? It doesn't seem like a way to take off the cable while it's still on the frame.

THrottle cable

Patrick, You don't need to remove the carb, all you need to do is unscrew the top of the carb ( look in your manual) It's a fairly easy job to change the cable. Pay attention to the direction of the slide in the carb bore and pay attention to the way the old cable is attached to the slide as well as cable routing. Good luck.......................D

You don't have to remove the carb, but I always do anyway...easier for me.
You can also see if the slide moves freely in the carb at the same time.
Even if you get a new cable, it is a good idea to lube it brfore you put it on.
Good luck finding the spring after it pops out of your fingers!

I followed your advice and submitted a request tot he marketplace, but due to my impatient nature I began searching for a throttle cable else where. I'd obviously like to follow your advise in purchasing the correct replacement so I'm a little hesitant to purchase from eBay. Additionally it seems many of the parts are shipped form Thailand and I really don't want to wait 10-25 days for delivery. Any suggestions on other sources? Would it be possible to pick up a new cable from a local store? Most of of the cables I've seen claim to be fairly universal. Should I be looking for a particular one? I didn't want to take off my old cable until I was ready to put the new one on. I figured this would help the installation. If need be though, I'd be fine with doing so to get a serial number.

Thanks guys!

Patrick,
