Ok...this is where I am at now.
New (for good measure) main jet from honda dealer. still 120 although I could not get it to tighten flush to the jet housing (the 8mm bolty sleeve thing that the jet screws into)
original (i think) 35 idle jet
clip on needle in middle position
bike will not stay started. runs rough with popping sounds that sound (like my friends 71 triumph tr6r)
this is if i keep throttle open.
then it started revving really high and erratic and then died.
i could get it to idle for about 30 seconds (sill rough) with the idle screw all the way in....
highly frustrating!!!
again -ran great with the originally posted settings...
All's good-fouled plugs
I would verify the the float level's height down to a fraction of a hair before you do anything else.

the recess
BTW, a change of slow (pilot) jet from 40 to 35 should not cause that effect if everything else was OK. The popping and banging and runaway idle sound more like an air leak or something.
I'd go back to basics.
Check the points and ignition timing
check valve clearances
Check the compression with the throttle wound fully open
Clean out the fuel tap (petcock)
Check the carb flange to see how bowed it is.
Check the O ring in the carb flange
And then try it again.
