Starts without choke doesn't sound right. All my CB77s over the years were really cold blooded.

I would suspect the air jets may be blocked or at least partially obscured

And YES, check the cam timing just to be sure

When I pulled the carbs apart last night, the slides were wet with gas, even up inside where the needle sits.

Not pooled gas, but good and wet.

That doesnt seem right to me.
