The "brown coating" is rust, so you have to move quickly to prevent it from forming, as it will begin in a matter of minutes.

When prepping for plating, I rinse with water, dry and immediately immerse in the plating solution.

When doing a tank, I would coat the inside with WD40 immediately after rinsing, then drain and fill with gas. (although I haven't tried it yet, others have said it works to eliminate the excess rinse moisture and prevent flash rust formation)

FWIW: Jim Townsend from the VJMC swears by milkstone remover (various names) available at farm supply places like Tractor Supply. Jim dilutes it to about a 10-15 % of original strength as I recall. I used it at about a 1:5 dilution with water. Cleans a gas tank very nicely. I've used it several times and it works well. Its about 56 % phophoric acid and leaves a sort of grayish phosphate coating in the tank. Its safe to use, and its reusable several times. Easy to dispose of too. Just dump in the yard.
I dont think it would be used on any pot metal parts either but I dont know for sure.

SnoBol Update!

Post by hondadreamca77 » Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:09 am

Update....I redid the tank as it flashed over with rust. Too slow adding oil inhibitor after cleaning. This go round I did the following steps...
1) Snobol Swish
2) Rinse with rubbing alcohol
3) Sprayed inside with WD40
4) Poured cup of mineral oil and swished around good.

Pics show tank inside after two days now.....yellowish liquid on bottom is WD40 and mineral oil that I will rinse out with gas before fill up. As you can see this gets it super clean. BTW....fresh step kitty litter bucket fits the tank perfect and is a drain trap as well for this operation. I wish I could zinc coat it inside but do not have that set up yet.

So this may be a dumb question but did you fill the tank completely with the sno-bol or just pour a bottle or two in and slosh it around?

I tried one CA95 tank with evapo-rust with good results, but got a little of the flash rust because I tried this after I had freshly painted it, and I wanted to be gentle with it, So I rinsed only with water and then dried with hair dryer and compressed air. (by the way very light rust)

I have Hydrochloric acid, and Phosphoric acid laying around, as well as 2 gallons of fresh evapo-rust. I have a CA77 and a CB77 tank that need to be done. I thought about taking it to a radiator shop in town that says they can clean it out without damaging paint for about $50 each. I don't really care if the paint gets damaged this time because I am cleaning them out first before repainting.

If sno-bol is just 20% HCL maybe I can just dilute it down myself (acid into water... I know) and try that? What other methods have people tried that worked well? Seems like the flash rust elimination is at least half of the process. This time I am prepared.

Sno Bol

Post by hondadreamca77 » Sun Sep 01, 2013 6:20 pm

Hi,

I just used one bottle of Sno Bol, undiluted. Swished and soaked four hours shaking every half hour. Rinsed and then used mineral oil and WD40 swishing and leaving two days. Came out beautiful. Two weeks now and rust free. Will tarnish chrome so be careful.

Best $1.99 spent on the Dream.
