Removing the fuel tank with the crossover tube is a bit fiddly and I was wondering if I could just plug the nipples in the petcock and tank and delete the crossover tube without any ill effects. Are the early tanks with crossovers the same internal geometry as the later tanks without the crossover so I can still use all the fuel in the tank?
Thanks,
George

Re: CL77 Gas Tank Crossover Tube
As I have plenty of gas line I install a length which fits into the valley of the tank and allows me to remove the tank and one can/could wish it helped the fuel balance in the tank. .........lm

Good point, LM. I've always run the crossover line under the frame tube so it has to be disconnected to remove the tank. I was just wondering if the tank geometry changed when the crossover tube was eliminated so fuel wouldn't or couldn't be trapped on the left side if that is even a possibility.

George, I'm not sure that the tank actually changed when the cross-over tube was removed. I usually plug both ends. If you run out of gas, you can lean the bike over to slosh gas into the other side of the tank. Motion Pro sells a quick disconnect that stops the fuel flow on both ends of the fuel line. they cost around $50, not really worth it to me, as I do way too many of these bikes!

I loop the tubing over the frame with all my bikes when there is a crossover on the tank.
As a word of caution, you must remove the tank or the crossover hose to completely drain if you are going to put into storage. I didn't do this last year and only drained the tank from the petcock on my Superhawk. With the gas we get these days there is apparently something that causes deterioration of the OEM 5 mm tubing. This leads to an unpleasantness with the wife and a dangerous situation when you store your bikes in the basement of your house.
