Keihin Slide Guide Replacement (non-305)

Post by brewsky » Mon Oct 25, 2010 8:29 am

Anyone ever replaced a worn slide guide (plastic type) on a carb body?

Working on a friend's 250 Elsinore and the carb is perfect except the slide guide is worn (or sheared off!) down to the point it jams the slide.

Tried the VJMOG site with no help.

Any experience welcomed!

Here is the offending part......
Round on the outside, squared on the inside, held in by some type of pressed in collar

Hi,

It seems to be the same plastic as used in the CB450 carbs, that means it can't stand modern fuels and modern two stroke oils. I replaced the tops of my CB450 carbs with teflon.

I would press it out, machine a new part out of HP and press it in (basically what I did to the carbs of my bomber).

I know, I know, to much tools, to much time, too gentle,

Thanks for the reply, Jensen.......

I talked to an engineer in the Keihin technical department and he was very helpful, but said he could not even get the part if it was his personal carb.

So I guess it's time to break out the bi-focals and fabricate something.

Thought about drilling and tapping and using a small bolt smoothed on the protruding end, or a pressed in pop rivet or something nylon pressed in or??????

What did you use for HP stock?

Hi,

I don't understand the question :
What did you use for HP stock?
Do you mean why I use HP, or what form of HP I used ?

I assumed you meant high density polypropylene.
Maybe I was wrong though.
What did you use to repair yours?

Drill it out and JB weld in a steel pin of appropriate dimensions. It's crude, but it works on H2 triples and a variety of other bikes suffering from the same issue.
