High Altitude carb problems fixed!

Post by GG » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:39 pm

I live at 5,000 ft altitude, and like others, have had problems with a rich mixture on my cb77 - especially at idle and low rpm's. I have the smallest low jet installed, and a 130 main jet - and still was rich. I rebuilt the carbs with the Keyster kits, but didn't use the Keyster needles, since I've read some negative things about the brass parts. Well, fussing around one day in my shop I figured I didn't have anything to lose, and the Keyster needles looked a tad bit fatter, so I installed these needles. Instant fix! I could back my idle screws 'way out and still get an idle, mid-range is great, I've got more power than before, I don't foul plugs, and I haven't checked the smog reading yet, but by the smell of the exhaust it is much better.

So for anyone up there in the hills, I would recommend trying the Keyster needles. Apparently some gasoline is sucked through the main jet at idle also, and the original Keihin needles appear to be slimmer, allowing just enough fuel through to make a rich idle. Whatever the explanation, all I know is that I've got a whole different bike!

Needle number

Post by GG » Thu Apr 07, 2011 7:01 pm

Hi LM. We think that the number is D9, but it's hard to see. These were the needles that came with the Keyster kit. They made a huge difference - much leaner than before, which is what I needed.

Keyster needles

Post by GG » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:47 pm

LM - well, that sort of de-bunks what a lot of folks have said about the Keyster brass parts. I now have the entire Keyster kit in my carburator, and it is great! Actually, it saved me. I wasn't going to ever be able to pass inspection here in Costa Rica, and without that, I can't get plates. Now I can see my way forward.

The entire kit for the CB77 is good for the CB/CL77 carbs.
There are others which are bad but not the CB77 kit.
To think I sent ya all those jets! ..........lm

Jets

LM - I AM using the jets you sent me! I have your 125's in the main jet, and something really small in the low jet. I just needed the different needles to complete the set!

I'll soon be cruisin' legally down here!
