CA77 Petcock Packing question

Post by Cheburashka » Sat Oct 27, 2012 7:13 pm

Question 1: I bought a petcock rebuild kit on Ebay. It looked pretty good overall, and everything fit well. After installing it and using it for a week, I removed the petcock to see if it was part of a fuel supply problem I was having. The black rubber packing was about the consistency of jello. The guy who sold it swears up and down that he gets the packings straight from Honda. Has anyone else had a problem with the packing being attacked by fuel? The only fuel I can get here is 10% ethanol, so that might be part of the problem, but it appears that the packing gets so soft that the orifices close off under the pressure of the spring-loaded petcock plate. Did I get a bad packing?

I've reinstalled my original petcock packing. I wanted to replace it because the rubber nipple on the "on" side was missing. I put a piece of tight-fitting brass tubing into the orifice and I now have the inlet at the proper height for the non-reserve setting, but I'm wondering if there's some reason that escapes me why that nipple is there. I don't think it can cause a leak to the outside of the petcock, but could it cause other problems down the road?

I appreciate any advice you can give me.

Cheb - All those parts are all available from Honda and I just rebuilt mine this past spring. I use only the finest fuel that Get-Go sells and it's 10% ethanol. I haven't had any issues with the Honda parts. In fact, the "packing B" from Honda was cork, not rubber. I wouldn't buy parts I could get from a Honda dealer on ebay, you can order them online for cheap and they come in the Honda bags so there's no mystery.

And to answer your original question... I believe all of the rubber nubs on "packing A" need to be in place for the petcock to operate and seal properly.

Thanks for the response!

This rebuild kit appeared to be original Honda parts. Packing B was cork. I'll get in touch with the seller again and see if he can clear this up. It's possible his supplier substituted non-Honda parts. I'm hoping he can send me something in the original Honda packaging as a replacement.

So how firm is packing A after it's been soaking in 10% ethanol gasoline for a month or so? Do they soften at all, or do they stay about the same firmness? The original doesn't seem to be affected by gas at all.

Getting tired of draining that tank.

Hi,

The original NOS rubber doesn't stand the ethanol, the reproduced by Honda rubber does.
The bags are different, numbers are similar. On the reproduced bags is a scan code, on old bags not. That's my experience,

Thanks. That's good to know. Apparently, there's also a non-Honda reproduction out there that has been giving people trouble.
