High revving and flooding CP-77

Post by WrenchRust » Wed Oct 07, 2015 11:03 pm

Two different issues?

The right carb is pouring fuel from the overflow tube. I pulled the float and held it under water to see if it was leaking. Didn't see any evidence of a leak. So maybe the seat? I pulled them and they seemed to sit well. But I noticed that needle was different than the ones I'm use too. Generally there's a little wire spring thing that holds the needle to the float. Does the 64 CP77 not have one of those?

Second issue, the high revving. Only happens when warm and then I adjust the choke. I can ride it without much issue until I adjust the choke and it then it goes crazy.

Third. When I took off the float, I noticed that the main jet was sticking out more then seemed normal but I don't have anything to compare it to so I took a picture. What do you guys think.

Hi Mr Rust,
Im just a young whipper snapper in this 305 business but I may be able to assist.

Excuse me if i suggest anything the provokes a "duh, of course i checked that!"

Have you checked your float height?
It should be 22mm or .866" from that notch to the bowl when held upside down and NOT compressing the needle spring.

what you've explained (needle is only held in by the bowl) is correct.

If the revs are going too high once warm try adjusting the stops on the side of the carbs. if you have to choke it to run right, chances are you just need the slides to be sitting a little lower, allowing less air in. you effectively have the throttle part way open.

That main jet location is correct. that's actually two pieces. the main threads into... i think thats the emulsion tube there?.

everyone always helps me around here, so i hope for once im able to help someone else.

I didn't think that float height could cause all that flooding, I had it at 21mm (it's where it was set when I got it and I couldn't remember the exact setting but it seemed close, thanks for reminding me of the setting) but I'll reset it and see if that helps.

I'm guessing my flooding problem is more likely in the seat/needle. I saw a guy on YouTube use brass polish, a q-tip, and a drill to clean up his seat. I'm going to give that a try.

But all that thread showing on the main jet still looks wrong to me. It's in as far as it will go and all that thread is still showing. Are you sure that's right?

some have issues with aftermarket carb hardware. not sure if theyre original or new bits in there.
