1966 honda dream ca77 petcock question

Post by choctaw » Sat Nov 07, 2015 6:24 pm

I have been trying to remove these 3 screws. I have used. wd-40,pf blaster, liquid wrench, a mixture of 50/50 transmission fluid and acetone. I have had no luck. I have let it set for 2-3 days on all the fluids I mentioned. I even used a impact screwdriver, any ideas?

If it was me, after trying all that you have, I'd be drilling the heads off the screws, but I'd make sure I had replacements on hand. But that's just me.

For tough screws in difficult places (where you can't get vice grips on the heads) I usually grind up a small drift punch and try to get it to bite into the edge of the screw head by tapping with a hammer. If you can get it to bite in two places 180 degrees apart, you will probably get it to turn with lots of patience and lots of tapping.

If you are going to drill the heads, get a left-hand drill bit - they are cheap - and if you use lots of pressure, the bit will probably grab the screw head and turn it out.

Have you tried some de-rusting fluid inside the tank?

Those are JIS screws so worth getting them out in one piece if you can.

Try tightening the screws just a little with a good fitting screwdriver. The screw is often less damaged in the 'tightening' direction and that can often break the grip of corrosion.

petcock screws

The last petcock I bought for my Dream had no screws. I tapped the holes with similar size SAE tap. You could also do metric. Both screws are plentiful.

True - if you got some taps, they can be any size you like, preferably metric to avoid Mr Honda turning in his grave...... :-)

I've enjoyed dismantling bikes from the US that have been held together with all sorts of farmyard fasteners.
