fuel tank thread repair

Post by OldStan » Thu Feb 11, 2016 12:08 am

My dream came with a spare fuel tank, in better condition than the one I'm using- except the threads for mounting the valve. PO drilled and helicoiled to 6mm, and crooked to boot. I don't want to drill out the valve for the larger bolts- and I'm not sure it would work due to clearances anyway- so I came up with an alternate repair. Since the holes are already too large to helicoil back to 5mm, and I couldn't find a 5mm insert, I decided to go with a 10-24 SAE insert with 3/8" OD thread that I found. 10-24 SAE is very close to a 5mm in size. I used a part off my Dowling jig to insure straight holes, drilled to 5/16" and tapped to 3\8".

Thought I'd put this out there as another repair option as it came out good.
