non ethanol gas

Post by catterar » Fri Jul 22, 2016 7:19 am

Just got my Dream on the road and filled the tank for the first time.
Is it worth the extra dollar per gallon to buy non etoh gas?
What mpg are the 305 dreams getting?
Thanks

It is commonly believed that ethanol will cause the O-rings and other rubber parts to swell but I'm not so sure.

Back in my chemistry lab days I had a selection of O-rings that were used to seal joints in glass apparatus. I would choose the O-ring material depending upon what it would contact and generally the small alcohols, such as EtOH, were very easy on the O-rings. Almost anything would do.

The problem is that I don't know what the rubber parts that contact fuel are made of but it would take a bit of searching to find something that was sensitive to ethanol. My guess is that there is something else in the modern gasoline formulation that is causing the problems.

The one difference in ethanol blends is that because the ethanol contains some oxygen, the engine will run a bit lean in its standard configuration. On CB77s the main jet is increased one size to #140. I don't know about Dreams.

I think it would make a useful experiment to try out a few tanks of ethanol free fuel and see what happens.

Thanks Tim,
I did fill with ethanol free fuel last night and I'll continue to do so for the next couple of tanks then switch to etoh 10 and see what my mileage looks like with the different blends.

If ethanol free gas was available where I'm at I would be using it as much as possible.
