Tell me if you think this would cause my problems ....

Post by hillhudson » Fri Jun 24, 2011 11:57 pm

so i have been having one hell of a time with my bike for unknown reasons. but i think i may have found what the problem may be but i need other opinions.. my left carb NO MATTER WHAT i have done to it, may it be cleaning the hell out of it or checking the float gap or the jets, NOTHING has made my left cylinder run right. i know its the carb because the compression is still the same in both cylinders and pistons have new rings, and valves are timed along with the points all to ED'S tune up guide.

basically i think someone may have junked up the left carb because i was looking at the chrome slides that were originally in the carbs when i got the bike and noticed that the slides both have the "R" indicating that they are BOTH for the right carb.. pics are below, and one of the slides has a TON of wear on it from being jammed into the wrong carb!

correct me if i am wrong but, i put different slides in (stock kleins) left and right, but that didn't fix anything. is it possible that the left carb is just unusable now ? after all the wear and tear ?

The reason they are R or L is because the guide pins and throttle stop screws are "handed". If it's a Right slide in the left carb, wouldn't the the slide would be the wrong way round?

With both slides in place and no air filter tubes, can you see the cutaway on both sides?

the slides CAN fit even though their is no LEFT slide but it rubbs really hard and sticks in the carb. who ever did this when i got the bike had no idea what they were doing,, i also found (after tearing down my carbs for the 100th time) that whoever rebuilt em last use none of the right jets and even the needles jets weren't correct. just a huge mess.

lm, that could be, some one could have put the left side choke handle on a right carb, but the slide marked with the "R" doesn't even fit without dragging and sticking, ... i went to my parts guy today and bought two correct cb77 carb and all the correct stock jets, i'm going to clean em all up and mount em and cross my fingers.

wish me luck.

Slides' cutaways MUST face the filters, not the cyl head!

esteve, i gotchya, i understand how they go, i was saying that the person who assembled my carbs before i bought it, didn't understand and i think they may have destroyed the left carb by forcing a right side slide into it,

i finally figured out what my problem was and its pretty ridiculous that i didn't notice from the start. whoever assembled my cb77 before i bought it must have known next to nothing about the bike because the left carb was a CL77 carb and the right one was CB77, not only that but neither of the carbs have the correct size jets or any matching jets at that. even the jet needles were for two different bikes. a HUGE mess. i feel like an idiot for trusting the fella who put it all together when i bought them. SO today i bought a LEFT side CB77 carb and all the correct stock size jets including needle jets, set the float levels and put in the CORRECT slides in the correct manor and boom, the bikes runs ! now i know to not trust anyone when they sell you assembled parts. DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING ! thanx for all the input guys.
