Running great - if only my plug color wasn't freaking me out

Post by Jlovvorn » Fri Mar 16, 2012 8:05 pm

Still crazy lean, and I can't chase it down.

Timing and valves done.
All carb joints and tubes tight and checked with carb cleaner during operation - no leaks found.
Restored the stock air boxes. (had no effect on lean condition)
Running 150 mains. (was lean with stock 135s as well)
Air mix screws turned in to 1/2 from closed.
All carb screws replaced and new rubber gaskets on the mix screws.
Float height checked and rechecked.

Runs awesome, but when I look at the plugs, they are terrifyingly white.

I want to call them light brown to make myself feel better, but they are white.

Maybe I screwed up the timing. Feel so close to success.

Any suggestions welcome.

"Air mix screws turned in to 1/2 from closed."

If the above is true ya have a timing issue. ................lm

Yup.

Just redid the timing today with a more knowledgeable friend, and I had it wrong.

The bike shaped right up, ran and idled awesome at about 1200 with good balance, with the mix screws both at one turn.

Took it around the block, and it was great. Like a new bike.

Sat for an hour, and went to ride it home.

Was perfect for a few miles, then started idling high (around 2,500), then dropping way down to less than 600 and threatening to stall.

Then it did actually stall, in heavy traffic at a green light - great fun.

Limped home, and now it won't idle smoothly, as before. Can't get it to idle below 1800 without stalling.

It was a fun bike for about 30 mins.

Correction: Now it will not idle at all.

It just races up to 4,000.

If you touch the left idle adjuster 1/8 turn out, it drops down and stalls.

1/8 up and it races up to 4,000.

This is totally new today. Never happened before, and all we changed was the timing.

And it didn't show up until 3 hours after we changed timing. For the first hour, everything was great.

The problem is clearly on the left side somewhere.

I need to sell the bike to someone more qualified to work on it.

I thought I was reasonably handy, but I have been defeated.

I don't know why I torture myself with this bike. My CB350 is superior in every measurable way.

Ed, I believe you have a challenge!

Ed has spent hours trying to help me.

I am a hopeless case.

Don't taunt him into telling me how stupid I am - I already know.

The sudden racing idle is just crazy.

Maybe it warmed up and a slide is stuck, or my carbs are overflowing into the engine.

It was running perfect and then, as usual, just crapped out on me.

Check your slides for freedom, both when cold and after riding a while (hot). Right now before anything else I would check timing again and if it is off, check points and points plate for security. I wish you luck on the bike. Cliff
