HIT A SNAG-HELP

Due to Holiday and employment obligations (to me inventory is a curse word) I am just getting back to my 305 project and I have run into a large SNAG. I did not X the gears due to the fact this bike will see very limited use and most of all I didn't want to take the chance of screwing something up since this is really the first transmission I have ever pulled completely down. The half's went back together nicely with Honda bond after I checked the shifting which was OK, but not silky smooth. I attributed this to the fact that from what I have read, these bikes didn't shift all that great when they were new. Yesterday I installed the rotor in anticipation of setting the head on today when I noticed what I consider to be an excessive amount of free play in the main shaft sprocket side. I compared this to my parts bike which in comparison is practically nil. I would estimate the shaft will slide out about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. OK guys, what have I missed. I read in Bill Silver's guide about int stalling thrust washers to take up slack, is this a fix for excessive wear in my main shaft, or have I missed something? Anyway you look at it I will probably have to go back in but thought I would see if you experienced guys could stir me in the right direction.

Brit, that's a lot of play! I think something must have been left out, or not installed properly. Sounds like you'll have to go back in, and figure out what's wrong. Good luck with it, and let us know what you find.

OK, here is my DAM (Dumb Ass Mistake). I'll post it just to save someone else from the same embarrassment. I missed setting the right side bearing into the half ring groove on the main shaft. BTW, Honda 3 Bond is good stuff, had to do a little rubber mallet tapping to get back in there. Everything is resealed and shifting good. I did have to order a new shift drum stopper and guide. I think that will help allot since the old one had extensive wear.

Brit, without mistakes we don't learn! I'll bet each of us has a story or two..... Good lesson for us ll there; thanks for sharing.

BTW, where can I get Honda Three Bond? I have some of Furuno's, used to seal the grounding cable studs on their open-array radar scanner; white, runny and sets a bit like acetic acid silicon sealer. I'd like to use the approved goop though. I really want to cure all my friggin' leaks, and I know the oil seeps from the c/case facing; I've run it up to temp and watched it bubbling away from the joint, taking the p155 out of me after I replaced all the seals.
