Should I split and inspect tranny

Post by zoom » Mon Oct 25, 2010 6:33 pm

Well I am getting to were I need to make a decision on the tranny. Its my CA77 recently posted in projects. 15k on the odometer. Condition is unknown. Bike was last licensed in 74. I have never dove into a gearbox other than replacing clutch plates many moons ago. I wouldn't know what to look for. I ordered all the service books I could and they will be coming shortly. Any good tutorials out there? I would assume there would be some gaskets I could replace.
Thanks for feed back

Looking at your restoration thread it appears that the cylinders are already off. Since your down this far IMHO it would be best to check the tranny out, if only for peace of mind. It's not that much more to get into it. As far as gaskets there are only the the oil pump and left side cover, but there are several seals that would be advisable to replace, which would probably be easier to replace by splitting the cases.

There is one bushing on the rear shaft that apparently can cause problems. Worn dogs and gear pitting are other possible problems. A search should find more information.

In the process you might find other problems you hadn't anticipated and be glad you caught them when you did. That's what happened to me.

Jay,
I would not even think about not looking into the transmission with that many miles. These transmissions are quite simple and easy to work on and if you choose to split, there are many here who will talk you through it. I can say with confidence that on the ones I've torn apart, I've found worn parts that needed to be replaced. One even had missing teeth on two gears, obviously the reason it got parked in the first place.
That is a very nice find you have there and you are putting a lot of effort into making it nicer so do the whole thing. That's my 2cents, RW
