I went out and pulled the winter wraps off my CA77 and measured the cable pull at the clutch end of the cable at 15mm (0.55"). I put the Clutch Lifter into the Clutch Adjuster, rotated the Clutch Lifter 15mm (as if it was being pulled by the cable) and measured the perpendicular movement (Clutch Lifter Rod) at 2mm (0.079"). So that tells me that the Clutch Pressure Plate should have about 2mm of movement.

That leads me to believe that there's something wrong with the clutch. I'll be out of town til next weekend, but I'll pull the clutch when I get back. I was hoping to ride the bike this weekend for a rally, but it doesn't look like I'm gonna make it. Maybe just need to polish the basket?

Well, I don't know if what I did was "correct", but it worked either way. The entire clutch adjuster was sticking out of the cas by about 2-3mm. I punched it out and found a shim that was about the same and installed in between the adjuster and cover. She works great now, even with about an inch of free play. I don't know why it stuck out like that, maybe just wear. And the fiche doesn't show any kind of shim there.

Glad you solved your problem.

I wonder if there is more than one adjuster design for the various models they made and you have the wrong aduster for your case design. I'm not sure why that would make a difference because you should still be able to adjust it until you get the proper contact with the rod.

Did your case look worn inside like the adjuster had been loose at one point and ate into the case?

I guess a comparison of CB, CA and CL parts books would tell you if there were different adjuster configs.

regards,
Rob

I didn't notice any wear. Also I thought the same about just twisting the adjuster until it made contact. I checked it with the cover off and by the the time I turned the adjuster enough to make contact, It was so far out it became unstable and would rock back and forth. I think this made the problem with the cable.
All I know is I can ride her now and I'm having fun!
