So I want to set my cam chain tension as well as my main final drive chain tension on my 61' 305 dream.

Is it a good idea to set my cam chain tension before I set my main drive chain tension?

Might be a rookie question, but I read the other topics that mentioned setting cam chain tension when crankshaft is at bottom dead center... how do I know that my crankshaft is bottom dead center?
And do I add tension to cam chain by loosening the set screw or tightening the set screw?

Also, how do I measure if my my final drive chain bushings are worn and also what is the overall correct tension?

Sorry for newbie questions....Any guidance and other information that might be useful would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Forest

There is no interaction between the two tensions.

The T mark on the generator show Top Dead Centre, so rotate the engine through 180 degrees to get BDC.

The screw just locks a spring-loaded tensioner. You undo the locknut and slacken the screw. That will allow the spring (inside the tensioner) to take up the slack. Nip up the screw, then tighten the locknut again.

Search for the Dream manual (linked from this site) for correct drive chain tension.

Whether the chain and / or sprockets are worn out is a little subjective. If you can pull the chain away from the rear sprocket and see daylight between them you chain is getting worn. Also look for sprocket teeth wear by observing if the teeth are worn in the direction of travel. If the teeth look unsymmetrical and appear to be leaning over, you have a worn sprocket.

Try and search for a good book on Motorcycle maintenance to help you with gaining a 'feel'.

G-Man, Thanks for the tip.

I wasn't sure at first if the "T" mark or "F" mark was top dead center.. thanks for the clarification.

And as for the chain tension I'm going to have a good read of that PDF file of "The Vintage Motorcyclists Workshop" that you sent me... Greatly Appreciated! Looks like a fun read!
