I recently finished tearing down the two spare engines from the parts bikes I bought last year. The plan is to tear down my own engine, compare all the parts, and pick and choose the better parts out of the three.
The problem is, I'm relatively new to internal engine work and don't know what to look for. I've cruised through a few threads where folks have posted up gears and shift forks to have other say that they're good or bad but I honestly can't tell aside from when it's obviously worn.
My question is, does anybody have a diagram or side by side pictures showing what a brand new gear looks like, a usable gear and, finally, a worn gear? Also, any other part of the transmission. I'm sure there are others that would benefit from seeing the degrees of wear and what are trouble signs to look for.
New gear v. good gear v. bad gear - How to tell
cyclon36,
OK, I am not a gear guru, but I did replace a "bad" gear on my CB77 that prevented me from using 2nd gear. It would immediately jump out of 2nd. The mainshaft 2nd gear was bad, but all I could see was a very minor rounding of the dog faces. You can see pictures in some old posts I made over a year ago. The assembled experts here identified the problem for me. (Thanks again!) So don't just look for a missing tooth. Larry Young
