Yesterday, while looking for cb160/175 parts, I found my cr 5 speed trans from the bike that I raced in the 60's and was surprised to see that it was in remarkably fine shape!
When I put the old bike together 4 yrs ago I used a stock motor and at the end of that season I x'ed the trans and found the closer ratios to be my preference.
My question to the experts is, if I install the 5 speed will the ratios accommodate the stock motor's power band without having to shift at 4-5,000 rpm? btw this bike has a bump seat, so no extra weight of a passenger.
The major concern is the obnoxiously loud cyb pipes, I personally like 'em, but not everyone does!
What would you do?

5 speed box
Hello Bikedoctor99
Well I don't think I qualify as "expert" but I have ridden my YB kitted bike on the street. Not often and not recently though ( it also had copy meggas on it with baffles, because strangely enough at the time it was too loud for the regs. at the race track).
Anyway the main problem is the high first gear, but with a bit of clutch slip it was OK and this was on a 250. Unfortunately I cant remember what kind of final gearing I had on it, so it could have been lower than std.
I know that its probably as good as one of the new Nova street boxes but it might be more fun than the std. one. And you could use the kickstart, if first gear has not been chopped / ground down ?
Have fun
Gordon

cr 5 speed trans
Hello Gordon,
I like your way of thinking and agree that It would be more fun than the original 4 speed.
The last time I used that trans was 1970 and was very impressed with the small drop in motor speed, perhaps only 5 or 600 rpm per gear change.
That motor was a developed 350 with all the available goodies and helped a previous owner win the can am 500 class series, but by the time I raced it, the best years had come and gone!
Soooo, I think that trans will be happy to be reunited with its old stablemate cyb pipes- probably scream with joy!
We don't have m/c inspections here, cops and lawyers ride loud Harleys and I'll just have to keep my enthusiasm under control!
Thanks for jogging my memory, Allan
