Ya can check the gear fitment with the bottom off if ya turn either shaft as ya rotate the shift drum from the right side.
HONDA BOND on the bottom case and the 2 areas where the center studs are on the top case. DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON THE SEALS OR THE SEAL AREA OF THE CASES.
I have a friend who split his cases 3 extra times cause the seals "WOULD COMPRESS OUT OF THE CASES" until I told him to have the Seals/Cases clean and dry when he installed the bottom to the top. Sometimes a thought which seems to make since can actually cause problems not expected!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ..............lm
sotxbill wrote:Ok.. got a trans off ebay and tried to use the back shaft with my front and it would not lay down correctly. It looks like one of the gears is too big, so I switched it with the gear off my old shaft and it layed down correctly in the housing. So either I have a switched gear trans or the one off ebay is a switched gear trans. It was the third gear counter shaft that I had to switch with my old one.

Next question... I have the honda bond. Do I just replace the seals, and place a layer of honda bond on the two cases and then bolt them together????

Thanks for the help as I struggle through this problem. Its difficult as I'm home only a day and a half each week. bill

I alwys put a light coat of sealer on the outside of seals, and have never had them " pop out". Yes you can check shifting etc with bottom case off, but I like to assemble cases to be sure all is correct. 15-20 minutes extra, well worth it IMHO.

And if ya have a problem ya could have seen with the bottom off (such as gears reversed) and ya waited until the bottom was installed then what?. .lm

Needed to, maybe. Did they do it, no! Don't mean to be contrary Ed, but it's just a little extra protection that has worked well for me. I've had seals leak that I didn't Honda bond.

I haven't. I'm probably on my 60+ (3 in shop now) engine and the only problem I've had was to learn to use a knife on the sharp edge of the case for the seals I need to press into a hole. I never add anything to the seals which compress when the cases are tightened to each other which is what that friend did and they squeezed out when the cases were tightened. HONDA didn't add anything to the seals and they stayed in place and only leaked after use and it was the seal bearing surface and not the side/edge. I think I can install seals as good as HONDA did. ......................lm

counted the teeth.. my third gear is correct.. the doner trans had a good counter shaft.. so we are back together. I'll load the engine into the car for the run back to Big D and see if I get time to drop it in this week. Trying to put the superhawk engine in the cl was a total bust. I found out the oil pump mounting hole was different, the head was different and the head studs are too long for the cl head... so it was go ahead and fix this one and bring the super hawk engine back home. There are a lot off differences between the two engines..

Lets hope I got this one back together ok. Everything seems to shift ok and everything seated and bolted together ok.. But the big test will be when I drop it into the frame and see if everything is ok..

Thanks for the help everyone.. I will let you know how this $800 dollar wonder turns out..(I wonder why I bought it). But then I would not have learned all about the insides of the scrambler..

Bill
