jumping trans on new cl77

Post by sotxbill » Thu May 14, 2009 8:38 pm

ok got the new to me (my second) cl77 running. rebuilt carbs and it starts and runs fine. Got the chain unstuck and lubed, changed the oil.. but when you put it in gear, it clanks and grabs.. so I tried second gear, and it still clanks and grabs...

any guesses?? bent shift forks or whats grabbing and clanking.. It runs fine in nuetral, but in gear it clanks really loud and grabs like it trying to engage two gears every few seconds of spinning on the kick stand. Is it due to kick starter not being in the correct position? Does the kick starter shaft have to be timed or parked in a special position before I place the cover back on? And this cover does not have a ball bearing in the end of the clutch rod. I think it needs one.

secondly,, can I turn it over and get to everything in the trans, with out pulling the top end off??

Also on the cl77, I have a cb77 complete engine and trans in the garage.. what would it take to run in the cl77 frame?? at least till I get the cl77 tranny pulled and fixed??

Thanks for your suggestions and help, As this bike is in Dallas, and my shop is in San Antonio. So I'm working beside my motorhome at the rv park with supplies brought in from home each week. It keeps me off the streets at night.

ok, top gear and the counter shaft both are missing teeth. I will see what the spare superhawk engine will do, till I can get parts for this one. I have top and bottom trans cases to replace the cracked cases, now will have to fine a counter shaft as I have a top gear in a box somewhere.

Wheres the best place to buy honda bond..?

Superhawk lower has the same trans. if you don't want to part it, I may have a countershaft. Honda dealers sell Hondabond, or an auto parts store may have three bond 4, same stuff.

Ok.. got a trans off ebay and tried to use the back shaft with my front and it would not lay down correctly. It looks like one of the gears is too big, so I switched it with the gear off my old shaft and it layed down correctly in the housing. So either I have a switched gear trans or the one off ebay is a switched gear trans. It was the third gear counter shaft that I had to switch with my old one.

Next question... I have the honda bond. Do I just replace the seals, and place a layer of honda bond on the two cases and then bolt them together????

Thanks for the help as I struggle through this problem. Its difficult as I'm home only a day and a half each week. bill

You better count the teeth on all gears, and make sure all is correct. The CA trans is the same, with different numbers of teeth on the gears. Apply the Hondabond to one side of cases, and i like to put a light coat around the seals as well. Also, before Hondabonding, completely assemble cases, a couple bolts to hold together is fine, and make sure it shifts through the gears, kicker works properly etc.
