CB vs CL Ratios

Post by mooney1el » Mon Jul 19, 2010 10:55 am

I am a bit confused. I have read here that the transmission gear ratios are the same for the CB and CL. And in this post ( http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... ght=ratios )I see that the CL77 ratios are 2.91:1, 1.66:1, 1.17:1 and 1:1. Yet, in my shop manual the CB72/77 ratios are listed as 3.26:1, 1.74:1, 1.27:1 and 1:1.

Can anyone shed some light, please

Thanks,

Richard

Transmission Ratios

Post by Dgormley » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:08 pm

Richard, according to my "Bill Silvers" books the CB/CL ratios are the same. The CA ratios are different. This of course is the internal ratios, the final ratio is determined by the counter-shaft sprocket and rear wheel sprockets...................................D

More confusion :(

Picked up a friend's Clymer service manual (published in 1971) and it lists the ratios as

3:12:1, 1.74:1, 1.27:1 and 1:1

In other words, it shows the same ratios for 2nd, 3rd and 4th and the Honda manual but 1st is different from both the other two sources.

In the same Clymer's manual, he CB is listed as having the same ratios as the CL. Neither my Honda manual not the Clymer's amnual show ratios for the C or CA versions.

Still more confusion, I'm afraid.

My engine is a 1965 CB77, #cb77e-1005392. I determined my gear tooth counts to be:

main shaft countershaft
#teeth #teeth
1st 18.000 34.000
2nd 24.000 27.000
3rd 29.000 23.000
4th 31.000 21.000

This worked out to ratios of

2.79, 1.66, 1.17, and 1.00 before I X'd the gears, and
2.79, 1.86, 1.31, and 1.00 afterward. If anyone wants to know how to get the ratios from the tooth counts, let me know. Basically you follow the flow of power as illustrated in the great pictures and video recently posted to this forum.

It would be reassuring to hear from someone else who found the same values that I did!

(My compilation of old Cycle World articles on Hondas claims the CL77 and CB77 have different ratios.)

Larry

CB72 ratios are 2.79, 1.66, 1.17, 1.00

My copy of an old Shop manual claims that the ratios are 3.12 / 1.74 / 1.27 / 1.00 which happen to be the CA ratios and match the gears listed at CMSNL which are 30/21, 24/27, 28/23, 35/16.

Anyone have a different set of gears in a CA?

Having torn down and rebuilt may CB CL 72s and 77s, the transmissions are identical.

Silver manual confirms the 2.79; 1.66; 1.17; 1.00 for both CB and CL
It also shows 3.39; 1.88; 1.38; 1.00 for the CA
All I know for sure is it's a long way from 1st to 2nd on a CA!
It looks like crossing 2nd and 3rd on a CB/CL (2.78; 1.86; 1.31; 1.00) gives close to what a stock CA has for the top 3.
Wonder what crossed CA gears do?
