CLUTCH WILL NOT RELEASE
CLUTCH WILL NOT RELEASEI am having an issue with my clutch since I pulled the stator/chain sprocket cover off on my 61 CB77. I replaced the stator with an newer better charging unit and a later model rectifier which I will report on once I can ride it. Anyway, the clutch does not disengage now. I pulled the cover back off and checked everything and it seems to be working. I adjusted the cable and the external adjustment on the cover to no avail. The clutch was working great before I took it apart. Everything went back together the same but I must be missing something.

However, I'm a kind person(!). It sounds to me as though the ball-bearing from the lifter thread mechanism has gone walkies (well, rollies, really). It needs to be present to allow the lifter to actuate the clutch pushrod correctly.
Now that is funny. I have exactly the same problem. 1963 305 Dream. Stored it in my garage 2 years ago. Today, I put a battery in it, fresh gas hit the starter and Vroom like it was just driven 15 min ago. I rolled it out into the sun and washed it. An hour later I was going to take it for a quick ride and the darn thing wasnted to kick me off. Clutch won't disengage. I never took anything apart. Pulled the cover today and the clutch seems ok. Seems ok. I put it all back together and same thing. I am at a loss..... Anyone got an idea?
Stan Did you disassemble the clutch plates?....if not they may be sticking together from setting unused. Try putting the trans in gear, pull the clutch in and rock the bike back and forth (engine not running) to see if they will free up. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
Yeah, that was my first move. I should have done my research before asking though. I'm seeing that this is common if these things sit awhile. Mine will be sitting again in a couple of weeks as I head down Route 66 and points south for the winter. Its a shame. This used to be a daily driver until 2 years ago.
Anyway, now when I actuate the clutch, I see the plates separating, but still the darn thing won't disengage. I'm going to pull apart and check the the right side for the ball (I didn't know about that until I started reading here). I had it apart and not knowing about it, it's possible the ball fell out. Does that ball just sit between the case and the clutch lifter? I'm looking at a parts manual and that shows the ball, but I'm not sure where it goes. All this because I wanted to take it for a ride before I head south............ Stan Ball bearingStan, the ball bearing resides in the clutch lifter where the clutch push rod goes...................D
OK, i took the cover off and cleaned out the hole and there was the ball. Used nice fresh grease and put it all back together. I guess the next step is get some brake cleaner and clean everything up, verify no metal plates are warped and clean up the surfaces on the metal plates.
Here comes a silly (and probably stupid) question. There is supposed to be oil inside this cover, right? This is the first time I ever had it off. Stan
