Pulled off the side cover and... Uh Oh!

Post by Sascha » Thu Nov 04, 2010 7:39 am

Hey Guys,

I cant say how helpful you have been in this restoration project, I recently managed to get myself in over my head.

So, was taking off the motor side casings and when I pulled the one off that was on the same side as the shifter lever, I ended up taking off this rod with a heavy cylinder on it... It was connected to a small chain and I cant figure out how to get it back in with the chain connected to it!?

Please help with this, i dont have a camera to post pics of it... Its on a '66 honda 305 dream.

Sascha,
You have described the oil cleaner. it is driven by the chain, driven by the little sprocket on the end of the crank. When you re-install it, the rod goes through the canister and you will find a thin washer that goes between the can and the cover. Look for the repair manual published here abouts and it should guide you through assembly. RW

Hey Rusty,

So, its a metal rod with a big metal cylinder on it... You say its an oil cleaner. Ok good to know.
So I have the washer, everything is good but I cant figure out how to get the chain back on it when reassembling it, can anyone weigh in on this? Can you direct me to the manual on the site? or a walk through of getting this thing back in place? thanks guys... PS my bad move was not draining the bike first, engine oil allllll over the kitchen floor!

Sasha, put the chain on both sprockets, and the slide the shaft through the cannister, and into the engine casing. You may want to disassemble and clean the filter before reinstalling.

Thanks Davo - I will give it a shot and let you know how it goes later tonight... I was swimming in engine oil trying to get it back on last night! Haha, the wife didnt like that too much.

Also - make sure the little pin in the shaft that bears against the washer is up at 12-o'clock before you try to reinstall the cover. You can see the area in the cover where it has to go into. I usually use cat litter on oil in the kitchen, then blame it on them.

Hey 48 - Haha... well played with the kitty litter. I would play that card if I had a cat!

Just so I get this straight:
so the washer (really thin) goes in between the casing that bolts back on the motor and the pin on the rod that has the pin facing 12:00?
