Post by wnbasac » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:52 pm

ok i'm a rookie and need a little help
>
my recent 68 ca77 purchase has a sticky clutch, i have to put it in gear and rock it to get it free
>
so i'm going to replace the clutch and parts but being the rookie that i am i started reviewing threads and the parts manual to see what was behind that cover and what i was up against
>
i have a spare engine that i wanted to practice on before i removed the cover and clutch assembly on my bike just in case
>
i've attached a few pic's:
>
1st is of the oil filter, do i need to take this apart for cleaning or just wash it ?
and i only see 1 o-ring i thought there was 2 or does this differ by years?
>
2nd. pic is of the clutch assembly, when i removed the clutch plates i noticed that 2 plates and 1 clutch disc remained ? i also noticed that there was a CLIP in the basket is this holding the plates in? how do i remove it just pull it out and does it go back in the same way?
>
thanks,lou

Lou,

You have an early small hole cover. It has one o-ring inside the large cover, and on on the small cover.

Remove the snap ring from the oil filter, and carefully punch the cover out from the backside. You'll probably have to clean the hole for the shaft up a bit after reassembly, make sure the filter spins freely on the shaft.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to compress and push those retainer wires up through the clutch hub. Depending on what plates you use when rebuilding, you may or may not be able to reinstall the wires.

>
i just wanted to have a trial run before i tackled my bike just to see what problems i might encounter as you can see i was a little apprehensive
>
i'm going to buy the cover gasket and o-rings then take it apart. i'll contact LM with pic's of the disc's when i have them out so he can validate what disc i actually have and need to purchase

Many clutches are sticky when cold, especially if its been a while since they have been used.

If they will free up by rocking in gear, they may be ok.

You might just change oil and clean the filters and run it a while to see if the clutch works ok when warm.

tks brewsky for your reply
>
ummm so you think i should change the oil and clean the filter'S?
>
when i look at the exploded view of the oil filter i don't see a screen?
>
i'll change the oil now and drive it a bit and if the problem continues i'll replace the clutch
>
i really appreciate the help and i know that all this seems redundant and basic 101, but to me its about learning and understanding how things work and how the parts are replaced.

tks, lou

I would change it if it hasn't been changed in a while anyway.
The manual says every 1000 miles.
The strainer is accessed from the bottom of the engine here:

ok now I see it's on the bottom of the engine. I'll take it out of my spare practice engine to see how it comes out and apart.

tks again, Lou
