Kickstart no longer engaging (most of the time)

Post by bbap » Mon Sep 17, 2012 8:24 pm

Hopefully, you guys can head me in the right direction...

When the bike's cold, I can usually start it fine with the kick starter. Lately, when I put my foot into the task it feels similar to when you try to kick it over with the clutch pulled in, but perhaps just a little more resistance. About 4/5 times, it will not turn the engine over and 1/5 it does - sometimes partially. Once it's up and running, no clutch issues, no shifting issues at all. I think I could use a new clutch cable as there is some very light binding, but nothing that I've not felt over the last year or so.

CA78, 305 Dream - 1963.

Could someome set me in the right diection on this?

Thanks so much! Steve

Your clutch cable might just be a little bit to tight. Maybe needs to be just a tiny but looser. Next time it does see if loosening the cable a bit causes the kicker to work again.

I loosened the adjuster at the perch up to 4 turns, but no difference. It engages at first and then the 2nd or 3rd kick, nothing but slight resistance. The large slotted screw at the base of the kicker, is this where I'm going next?

Go through all the steps to adjust the clutch and cable and see if that makes a difference.

thanks, I'll check it out and post results back. It's gotta be an adjustment thing - I hope :)
