Starter motor turns starter chain, enigine won't turn over

Post by Tinman » Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:38 pm

The starter motor on my CA77 works and drives the drive train, but the engine won't turnover. Anybody have an idea or suggestion on what I should be looking at? The starter clutch perhaps? Or is it something internal that I can't get to without splitting the case?
To remove the rotor, is it a M16x1.5mm bolt I use?

When I pulled the r/case this little spring fell out. Any idea where it belongs?

Thanks in advance.

Edit to include: The file size is too large to add a picture. Sorry, I tried.
The spring is approx. 3/4" long by 3/16" in diameter.

Tin - I'd get my hands on a parts manual. If you don't have one, email me and I'll send you the pdf. The spring is from the starter clutch and it probably needs attention. Not that hard to do and the springs, caps and rollers are all available from Honda. The clutch housing if you need it is usually found on ebay. Use the search function in the yellow left margin and you'll find lots of info. You'll find that more of the members here will jump into the discussion if you put your location in your profile.

48, thanks for the information. I pulled the rotor/starter clutch and it looks like all the springs are missing, one cap has been ground about 1/2 way and the outer clutch housing is cracked. The bearings and the drive sprocket surface look good. So some replacement parts are in my future. Hopefully this will solve my problem.
