Shifting issue, bike apart ... may be able to use any tips

Post by mips » Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:13 am

I have a '67 CL77 that I just recently got running. Replaced most of cables, but still waiting on clutch cable (current one is quite stretched out, but seemed to work).

Took bike on test drive a few days ago. Ran well, had a hard time getting into a gear. I can't recall if it was second or third. I'd estimate I was going 15-20 and trying to upshift if I remember correctly. It happened twice in my run around the block whilst shifting. It felt like I absolutely could not get into the higher gear. Revs up/down Clutch all the way in and pressing as hard as I could. It eventually went and when it transitioned, it seemed smooth in that gear. It somewhat reminded me of a bike with a centrifugal clutch and having the clutch maladjusted and really having to stomp on it or get it just right.

Here is where I am now. Someone welded the shifter arm, which I cut off and am getting ready to replace. 5 disc clutch set is apart (disc at 2.65mm). Do I need to place the shifter linkage in any specific way? Also, is there anything else I should look for? I have some new discs, but the old ones don't seem to be too horrible (new are 2.75 mm or so).

I'm asking because if my problems are symptomatic of a gear problem, I don't want to put everything back together only to have to split the cases later. Any suggestions? I was thinking that MAYBE my clutch isn't fully engaging/disengaging bc of a bad cable, but not sure. I should have got the symptoms better, but I had pulled the case apart to do the shifter shaft and figured it would just be a worn clutch.

Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you have the engine apart I'd like for you to call me.
If you can do that now I'll PM my number to you. .......lm

I only have the clutch side cover off and everything out on that side (except main shaft/bearing)
I'm not out of class until 5 p.m. central. Tomorrow I'm off. let me know what would work best. Thanks!
