Clutch won't engage

Post by rider5 » Tue Feb 12, 2013 8:28 pm

It's a '65 CA77 that sat for many years in a garage. I've gotten her running and was all set to finally take her for a spin but the clutch ain't clutching!

Have read alot about warming the plates, and problems with sticking etc. Have both crankcase covers off and am about to order parts to rebuild clutch, replace cable, etc. Bill Silver talks about an improved design for the friction plates, they have diagonal grooves instead of the original "block" pattern, and were later used on the GL1000's (as well as several other models I'm sure).

Have any of you rebuilt your clutch using these plates? I can find new plates of either type, and am trying to choose. Mine has the 5-plate pack - don't really see much problem with the plates I have, and steel plates aren't warped at all. But since I've got it all open am planning to get new plates, discs, springs, cable etc.

Bike has a little over 10,000 on it so I figure it's about due anyway. O'course I'm really a newbie to restoration (have never tackled anything like this before).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

5 - Alton Ill must be warmer than Cleveland!!! Assuming the clutch was stuck, I would just clean the plates, coat with oil and reassemble. Make sure the right side is assembled correctly with the 5/16 ball in the lifter and adjusted properly. The original friction disc design works fine in the Dreams, I really see no reason to buy and install Gold Wing plates. Lots of good info on clutches using the search function in the left margin. BTW - If the old clutch cover gasket comes off in one piece I'd just reuse it until you get your issue sorted out. Then if it leaks, use a new one.

I replaced the Drive plates and Friction plates with new Barnett parts about 150 miles ago. It' really made things better. Prices have gone up at that seller, so you may find better prices. Try direct from Barnett, but they were pricier at the time.
