I think I have read every post about the various clutch plate configurations but still have a question.
The bike is a 1964 CB77 - the clutch has been difficult for some time (dragging and slipping) so I decided to take a look. It is a standard 6 plate (fiber) assembly with 3 wires, the problem turned out to be a broken fiber friction plate. After reading the various posts I decided to go for the 5 thicker metal plates, I assumed that in order to maintain the thickness of the plate stack I would leave out one of the metal plates (and of course two of the three locking wires).
However looking in the 205-305 shop manual there is a very clear cross-section (labeled CL72/77) of the clutch showing 5 friction plates. The thicker inner metal plate plus 5 thinner metal plates and showing the final metal plate in contact with the outer pressure plate. The exploded view shows the 6 plate configuration with the pressure plate in contact with the first friction plate.
Which is correct? It boils down to whether the final plate in contact with the pressure plate should be a friction plate or a metal plate?

1 thick steel plate, 4 thin steel, 5 friction, outer friction in contact with pressure plate.

OK all done - great improvement! All the things I thought might have been gearbox-related turned out to be the clutch. Cleaned the oil strainer thingy and refilled with 10-30 and the bike is a pleasure to ride.
