Clanking from StartClanking from StartSo this is my first post, and I really dont know what im talking about because this is my first motorcycle and my first restore. I picked up a 65 honda dream 305 and it finally did something besides sit in my garage and look pretty. but when i press the electric start button a LOUD clanking came from the side of the bike with the kick start. I know im tearing it apart tomorrow, but i just want to know what i should be looking for.
and i want to say thank you to all of the posts because it has saved my time and money! so thank you.
Re: Clanking from StartMight have broken the chain that drives the crankshaft from the starter sprocket. Did the bike run before this happened? Did it kick start fine?
If so, those parts are still available from HONDA. But why the clank? I thought a slipping starter clutch just resulted in the sprocket spinning freely.
I'm assuming it must be from the clutch slip/grabbing during cranking. It is normal for the chain to have some slack. My superhawk has this sound intermitently during cranking and it sounds horrible. This is the conclusion that I have come to based on past posts here. I am regreting not replacing these items on rebuild and have yet to go back in to inspect. I would say that a teardown and inspection in this area is in order if there are no issues with the chain and sprockets as you suggested. 64' CB77
65' CB160 CLANKBefore you tear it apart you might want to get your ear down close to that side case and hit the starter to see if you can get a better idea exactly what area the clank seems to come from.
Does your kick start seem to work okay?
