Success!!! Checked the points and the coil and both were fine. I was looking at the parts diagram and I saw I was missing the rubber cap that goes over one of the wires on the top of the ignition switch. I found it inside - it had slide off for some reason and worked its way down the wire to the inside of the bike. So I put it back on and just in case I zip tied the clutch cable off to the side, taped up the melted part and he started right up! Nice and strong! Just to make sure, I started it 4 times and all 4 times it started right up! Yeah!! Amazing how a silly little rubber cap can cause so much trouble! Thanks all for your help!
