Will this work for a CA77?

Post by Jethro » Wed Feb 20, 2013 6:40 pm

Hi there, just curious if anyone knows if this coil will work for a CA77? The seller isn't sure if this coil is for a points based ignition or a CDI type ignition. Does it matter?

Thanks!

Jethro,
When I was searching for a replacement coil, somebody on this board mentioned that I could use a coil from a CB750, but wasn't sure. Here is a link to a thread I started and the last post I entered has a link to the type of coil I bought and am currently using with no problems.

What's nice is that it fits right into the OEM coil bracket and into the original location on the frame without any modifications. The company I bought it from advertised it as a CA77 replacement coil. You will have to find some 7mm solid core wires and 5ohm resistor caps to complete it. Perhaps you can go to Classic Cycle Parts website and see if they still offer it. I've boufgt several items from them and have had no problems. Good luck.

A coil from almost anything will work. Mine was running with an automotive coil with the spark plug leads taped together.

I use almost any Honds 350-500-750 coil.

Nice one. Thanks for the advice guys. The one mentioned above might be from a CDI type system so that's cool with me:)

Thanks!

Jethro,
A word of caution if you're going to use a coil intended for CDI type ignition systems. I went that route and after about 3 minutes running time, the coil became very hot, expanded to the point where the case cracked and started to smoke. Luckly I caught it in time before it did any further damage. I have not experienced any problems with the coil I have and the problem hasn't duplicated itself since.

I'm not sure as I am no expert, but I'm curious if a coil that's intended for CDI has a different resistance than a coil for a points type ignition. And that my friend could be the reason why mine nearly did what it did. With that said, replace with a like item that's intended to work with the system you have and don't substitute.

Hopefully somebody with more electrical knowledge will add their 2cents.
